How the Tile Calculator Works

This tile calculator computes the total room area in square feet (length times width), then calculates the area of a single tile by converting its width and height from inches to feet and multiplying. Dividing the room area by the tile area gives the base tile count. A waste percentage — typically 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal, and up to 20% for complex rooms — is added to account for cuts, breakage and future repairs. The result is rounded up to the nearest whole tile. Dividing by tiles per box (rounded up) gives the number of boxes to order. Always buy at least one extra box and keep tiles from the same dye lot for future repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need for a 10×10 room?
A 10×10 room is 100 sq ft. Using 12×12 tiles with 10% waste, you need about 110 tiles.
How much waste should I add when buying tiles?
Add 10% for a standard layout. Add 15% for diagonal patterns. Add up to 20% for complex designs or oddly-shaped rooms.
How do I calculate tile for a backsplash?
Measure the area in square feet (width × height), subtract outlets/fixtures, then add 10% waste.
What size tiles make a small room look bigger?
Larger tiles (18×18 or 24×24 inches) with minimal grout lines create an expansive look. Light colours also help.
