Dog Age Calculator
Convert dog years to human years using the scientifically accurate 2019 UCSD formula — not the outdated ×7 myth.
How the Dog Age Calculator Works
The common "multiply by 7" rule has been debunked. A 2019 study published in Cell Systems by researchers at UC San Diego used DNA methylation data to map how dogs age relative to humans. The result is a logarithmic formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This captures the reality that dogs mature very rapidly in their first year — a 1-year-old dog is developmentally similar to a 31-year-old human — and then age more slowly. Size modifiers are applied because giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans than small breeds. For cats, the International Cat Care standard lookup table is used: the first year equals roughly 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more, and each subsequent year adds about 4. This reflects the rapid early maturation cats share with dogs.
