How to Calculate Square Footage

For a rectangular room, multiply length × width — both in feet. A 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet. For irregular shapes, split the area into rectangles or simple shapes, calculate each one separately, then add them together. For circles, use π × radius². For triangles, use (base × height) / 2. If your measurements are in inches, divide the result by 144 to get square feet; if in metres, multiply sq m by 10.764.

What Counts as Floor vs Wall vs Yard Area?

Floor area = length × width of the room. Wall area = perimeter × ceiling height, minus door and window openings (subtract roughly 21 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window). Yard area includes everything inside your property boundary. Roof area on a pitched roof is larger than floor area — multiply by the pitch factor (1.06 for 4/12 pitch, 1.12 for 6/12, 1.20 for 8/12).

Common Uses for Square Footage

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square footage of a room?
Multiply the room's length by its width, both in feet. A 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet. For L-shaped rooms, split into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together.
How do I calculate square footage of a wall?
Multiply wall length by ceiling height. For a whole room, use perimeter × ceiling height. Subtract roughly 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per standard window.
How many square feet is a 10×10 room?
A 10 ft × 10 ft room is 100 square feet. In square metres that's about 9.29 sq m; in square yards about 11.1 sq yd.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply square metres by 10.764 to get square feet. 100 sq m = 1,076 sq ft. Conversely, divide square feet by 10.764 to get square metres.
How do I calculate square footage for a circular area?
Use π × radius² (radius = diameter / 2). A 20 ft diameter pool has a radius of 10 ft: 3.1416 × 100 = 314 sq ft.
Does square footage include walls or just floor?
Square footage usually refers to floor area only. For real estate, it measures interior finished floor space. For paint or wallpaper estimates, you need wall square footage, which is a separate calculation (perimeter × height).
How do I calculate square footage of an irregular shape?
Break the area into rectangles, triangles and circles, calculate each one, then add them up. Our calculator supports rectangles, triangles, circles and L-shapes directly.
How accurate does the measurement need to be?
For material orders, measure to the nearest inch and then add a 10% waste factor. For real estate listings, standard practice is to round to the nearest whole square foot. Our calculator accepts decimal inputs for precision.
